Explosive Detection K9 Program

The Wyoming Office of Homeland Security has five canines who joined the Wyoming Office of Homeland security as certified Vom Kaiserhofe explosive detection dogs. Three of the dogs are assigned to handlers within the Wyoming Office of Homeland Security. K9 team Tischer and Wilco are based in the Casper International Airport. K9 team Scimone and Lillie are with the Wyoming Highway Patrol, and K9 team Raymer and Wilson are based with the University of Wyoming.

The canines are primarily utilized when there is no inclination of where an explosive device is located. The canines are also trained to sniff out explosive devices in vehicles and schools.

Each canine has a "sniffer vocabulary" consisting of 12 different odors.

The canines may be deployed anywhere in the state, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, via request. Requests can be made by calling (307
) 777-4900 or by calling Highway Patrol Dispatch and asking for the WOHS duty officer.

Handler Officer and K9 Bo

Larry Majerus has spent the last three decades in public safety. Majerus began his career in law enforcement in Lake City, Minn., as a police officer. In 1979, he relocated to Wyoming to work for the Douglas Police Department and, just five years later, became chief of that department.

He was the Douglas Police Chief from 1984 until his appointment to the Wyoming Office of Homeland Security in 2003. He graduated from the FBI National Academy in 1987 and earned a bachelor's degree with honors in administration of justice from the University of Wyoming in 1993.

He is currently a Certified Peace Officer, credentialed as a Wyoming State Trooper, holds a Certification as a Explosive Detection Canine Handler and is a member of International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators.

K9 Bo is a male Yellow Labrador and received his explosive K9 Bodetection training and was certified at the Vom Kaiserhofe Training Center in Lawrence, Kansas.

In September 2005 Bo was assigned to his handler Larry Majerus. Majerus and Bo have recertified annually since the initial certification.

The K9 team trains weekly and has utilized their skills in the following details:
Governor protection,
Legislative protection and Capitol security,
2008 Delegate security,
Assisted Secret Service with Vice Presidential detail, and
Responded to numerous local requests for Explosive Detection K9 assistance.

 

Larry Green and K9 Haggard

Officer Green and K9 HaggardLarry Green was born in Gainesville, Texas. After graduating from the Air Academy High School, Colorado Springs, he joined the Air Force in 1977 as career Security Forces and started with the Wyoming Office of Homeland Security in 2002.

He is a graduate of Southern Illinois University School of Engineering and Technology where he received his Bachelor of Science degree. He currently is a Certified Peace Officer, holds a Certification as an Explosive Detection Canine Handler and a member of International Association of Bomb Technicians and Investigators.

K9 Haggard is a male Yellow Labrador and received his explosive detection training at the Vom Kaiserhofe Training Center in Lawrence, Kansas.

In September 2005 Haggard was assigned to his handler Larry Green. Green and Haggard have recertified annually since the initial certification. Haggard is also certified by the ATF in odor recognition for TATP. K9 Haggard

The K9 team trains weekly and has utilized their skills in the following details: Governor protection,
Legislative protection and Capitol security,
2008 Delegate security,
Assisted Secret Service with Vice Presidential detail, and
Responded to numerous local requests for Explosive Detection K9 assistance.

K9 Gorda - Retired

K-9 Gorda is a female Yellow Labrador approximately 3 years old. Gorda received her explosive detection training at Vom Kaiserhofe Training Center in Lawrence, Kansas. In July 2007 Gorda was assigned to her handler, Bob Mason and both were certified as an explosive detection K9 unit.

 

Trooper Joseph Scimone and K9 Lilli

Trooper Scimone and K9 LilliJoseph (Joe) Scimone was born in Tucson, Arizona and graduated high school in Sahuarita, Arizona. After high school he attended William Penn University and earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business Management with a minor in Economics.

Joe has 6 1/2 years of service in Law Enforcement. He started his career with the Cheyenne Police Department in 2001, and in 2003 he continued his law enforcement experience by becoming a trooper with the Wyoming Highway Patrol. Joe is a also a Certified Detection Canine Handler. Joe and his wife are expecting their first child this summer.

K-9 Lilli is a female Black Labrador approximately 1 year old. Lily received her explosive detection training at Vom Kaiserhofe Training Center in Lawrence, Kansas. In October 2007, Lilli was assigned to her handler, Joe Scimone and both were certified as an explosive detection K9 K9 Lilliunit.

Officer Ben Raymer and K9 Wilson

Officer Raymer and K9 WilsonBen Raymer graduated from West Salem High School in Wisconsin and recieved his BA in English from the University of Wisconsin, LaCrosse. After graduating he was a U.S. Border Patrol Agent in McAllen, Texas and then an Law Enforcement Officer for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in Grand Junction, Colorado. Ben is currently an Officer with the University of Wyoming.

He holds a Certification as an Explosive Detection Canine Handler.

K9 Wilson is a male Yellow Labrador and received his explosive detection training at the Iron Heart Training Center in Lawrence, Kansas. K9 Wilson

2009 Wilson was assigned to his handler Ben Raymer.

The K9 team trains weekly and utilizes their skills in the following details: Governor protection,
Legislative protection and Capitol security,
2008 Delegate security, and responds to state/local requests for Explosive Detection K9 assistance.
